if i could do anything differently for our movie, i would. in my perfect world, i would've liked to have built actual sets inside of a filming warehouse, and used artificial lighting to keep everything nice and constant instead of having to fight the sun for consistent lighting. for actors, i would've liked to have an actual man say the lines for Gigi's dad, instead of having to edit my own voice, and (gia i love you girl but i have to put the movie first....) i would've liked to have some better actors. there are a lot of nuances to a performance like this, and it can be hard to really capture it, so i think maybe someone who was more trained for it could've maybe conveyed the emotions better.
i would've definitely made the setting a little different. in gigi's room, i would've put more clues inside. pictures of her mom, older-looking stuffed animals, presents for her birthday... just little things to elevate the story-telling. And then downstairs, I would've definitely decorated more. I wanted it to feel like Gigi was really excited, that she went all out for her party with her dad, only for everything to basically get canceled. the decorations felt a little last minute, which i do think gave a different kind of feeling to the movie and made it sadder, but it was a bit of a shift from what i originally wanted. unfortunately, though, we are just high school students so we can't exactly afford to splurge on extravagant birthday decorations.
another thing that i would've changed is the editing. though i think we did a good enough job, i can't deny that i do still wish that i could put what is in my head directly to reality. specifically, the title screen. when i first came up with the idea for it, i literally pictured a dally in while zooming out to create a bit of a disorienting feeling, as the frame captures the main character blowing out her candles. the music would come to a crescendo, take an abrupt pause as she draws her breath and blows out the candles so we can hear the sound, and then continue as the smoke blows, screen turns black, and the candles from the cake remain, in the form of the title.
