26. editing

I’m sure most of you were probably expecting this blog to be shorter than it’s actually gonna be, lol. If you really want to know the little details, you should check out thu’s blog! She’s bee the one mostly in charge of this area.

But i’ll do my best to give you the rundown, and I might even tell you of my own little pieces of work for it.

First thing I wanna get out of the way is what type of video software we were using. And I say were because of a… slightly inconvenient but also funny little hiccup in our process.  As I’m sure everybody knows, TikTok got banned recently for like.. 12 hours? Barely a day. But, the important part here is that a handful of apps also got banned alongside it. One of those being, yes, CapCut. Now, CapCut and I have a looooooong history, way back when I was a 10 year old girl on the BTS Amino app making very bad edits of colorful k-pop boys. It’s a relatively easy software to use, everything is labeled and theres a ton of tutorials out there on the internet. And if not, well its really just a matter of trial and error. So, it really was a race against time to get the film opening off the app. And we did! We managed to download it just before the app got banned, and we were pretty much done with the film by then, so we didn’t panic much.

But I definitely almost peed myself when we found out capcut was getting banned.

That wasn’t the only problem we ran into, though. No, far from it. We actually had our suspicions that the film might end up being too long for the end version, but it genuinely surprised us when we put it all together and we saw it was about 4 minutes long. Now, considering our absolute cut off limit was 2 minutes… yeah, not good. Thu who, as I previously mentioned like a thousand times, is mainly in charge of the editing, did her best to cut it down, but it still ended up at 2:50. So, we got together during class and we took it into our own hands. I had a suspicion that maybe she had left in moments that were just a little too long, which I didn’t blame her for because it probably came down to cultural differences. And it ended up being right, there were just a couple of moments that could be shortened or completely cut out. Not only were they adding too much time to the movie, but they were also a little pointless and awkward.

For example, there’s a couple of sequences in the film. Gigi doing her makeup, Gigi setting up the cake, Gigi going down the stairs. I saw a couple of opportunities to make use of some jump cuts. I had this little joke in my head of comparing her setting up her little pity party to the asmr influencers on tiktok that do the “pov: cleaning out my fridge” type of videos. They make use of a LOT of jump cuts and stop motion, and it actually does turn out pretty satisfying to watch. I wanted to replicate that, especially because I knew it would do wonders for cutting down our time. So, I shortened the clips and stitched them together with cuts between. Gia also helped with this, she made sure that it aligned well and that everything was nice and centered. We had to be careful, though, since the project already had a lot of cuts. We mostly made use of the basic cut, but we do have a little fade at the end of the opening.

We managed to get it down to under 2 minutes within just a couple of taps. Yay us!

We had also discussed what video effects we wanted to use. I had suggested adding a bit of a glow to it, subtle enough that it wouldn’t make it hard to see what’s going on. A little nod to high key lighting and that nostalgic, almost dreamy feel we’d originally wanted. Though, I’m gonna be honest, I’m not sure if we’ve gotten to that yet, with the whole CapCut ban and all…

Guess I’ll get back to you on that!
