25. title sequence

25. title sequence

Title sequencing might have been the hardest to decide on, aside from maybe the shots. We had lots of ideas, though I wont bore you much with them. I’ll try to make it quick.

Originally, we had planned to do the title sequence in the form of the main character, Gigi, flipping through a digital camera’s photo gallery. Since we wanted to have a nostalgic feel, it felt right. We could also get creative with it that way, since the titles could appear in interesting places on the photos. However, we also quickly realized that it wouldn’t be possible to do that. Our film was growing to be too long with all the ideas we were having, which I’m aware is a common thing for people like us who have a little too much dreaming on our minds. Aside from that, it also occurred to us that… none of us had a digital camera to do this with. And where would we even get the photos? would we have to pay some middle aged woman to pretend to be a mother?

Luckily, we were able to pivot. As we were going over the storyboarding and the camera shots/angles, we started to realize that we had a perfect opportunity in our hands. It was what ended up being our final vision for the title sequence. In the beginning scenes, when Gigi is getting ready for her party, we were gonna have close ups of her getting her makeup done, detailing her process. It made me remember of a particular barbie movie (which I’m sure we all love) that apparently really stuck with me. In Barbie: A Fairy Secret, the title sequence is also done when Barbie is getting ready, though it’s a little different. It centers more around the entire process of getting ready, and there are some really cool shots with racks of clothing. so, a suggestion was made and it quickly transformed into our title sequence, ta-da!

As for how we decided on what titles, we really just tried thinking about the jobs we were doing. For group members like Thu, it was pretty obvious what their title would include. Since Thu always does the editing, it made sense to give her that. But for some other people it was more complicated, especially since we change our roles after a couple of days. We struggled a bit between being too basic and sounding too much like we were trying to be something we’re not. But, I’d say we ended up choosing the right things to match in the end.
