22. why the mom?
22. why the mom?
but we have reached a checkpoint! it's been a little bit since we've had a more relaxed post, so here we are.
so, i wanted to take this blog post to answer something im sure some of you are wondering: why the mom? the dad could've been the one to pass away, but why did you pick the mom to be the absent parent in gigi's life?
well, the short answer is because it connected to our target audience better, as well as to ourselves. the long answer is...
i wanted to talk about how complicated of a topic to represent girlhood is. not because people are unwilling, but because its such a varied experience. sure, there are some common threads that link them all to each other, but every single woman in the world goes through a different journey. media often portrays female teenagers as irritable, rebellious, mean. its a trope that almost everyone knows of! you're either the popular mean girl, the "not-like-other-girls" girl, a nerd, or you're groot (my glorious king).
guys... we don't bite! i promise you that most of us teenage girls aren't satan on earth, and i hate that media constantly portrays it like that. so, i wanted to change that in our own film. girlhood is a beautiful journey, even if it has its downs at times. there's nothing more comforting than seeing girls band together in bathrooms for complete strangers whenever one girl needs something, or walking down the street and being complimented on an outfit by another girl. seriously, ever been hyped up by complete strangers?
and, in our film, i wanted to highlight one part that is the most important about girlhood, at least in my opinion. moms. my mother has personally had such a huge impact on me, we've grown closer than ever the older i get, and she's often the first person i think about whenever i'm deciding on something. shopping together, stealing clothes from her closet, being bestowed the blessing of her old shoes that i used to try and walk in when i was younger... it holds a special place in my heart. and i think the same can be said for a lot of young women out there, too! so, that's the reason i chose to represent that particular issue. question, answered!
