07. mood board
for this blog post, i have created a mood board for the movie i recently wrote about in blog post 5!
if you haven't seen that yet, you can read it here! (great blog, i promise you and i have absolutely no bias whatsoever 100% real, no clickbait) today, i'll be going over the pictures i chose to include in the mood board and why. so, lets get into it!

now, there are some pictures that can be self explanatory here. for example, i included the swatch of barbie pink because i felt that it was an obvious must-have in the collage. the Hollywood sign and a picture of the beach were included in order to remind me of malibu, or LA, where Barbie lives! the same can be said for the dollhouse as well.
but there are some other pictures that i had to put a lot more thought and care into. the first one that i want to touch on the rocket, since it seems very out of place. i chose to put that picture into my mood board because the theme of the movie is journey and discovery, which i feel is something that is symbolized very well by a rocket. exploring outer space and discovering new lands may be on another level than what is portrayed in the Barbie movie, but if I was working on the script I would want to remember that this is a journey of self-discovery. next, the picture of football. one conflict of the movie is the patriarchy. i represented this by including a sport that i feel is very traditionally masculine. i also represented ken's macho fashion seen later in the movie with the fur print.
another choice that might be a little puzzling is the movie poster of freaky friday. i chose to include this because freaky friday is a movie that revolves around a sudden switch that leads to learning a life lesson, which is pretty similar to the premise of the barbie movie. obviously there's a lot more nuance to it, but i felt like it reminded me enough of the barbie movie to put it up on there. the picture of cyndi lauper's "girls just wanna have fun" was also up there for a similar reason. did you know that the song was originally written by robert hazard, meant to be about how women only want to have a good time instead of settling down? of course, that's not the version we know now, thanks to cyndi laupner. she changed the song into a feminist anthem, about being free and not being forced to settle down. that's what inspired me to put it on the mood board, something about the way cyndi laupner completely transformed the meaning of the song with a few tweaks really reminded me of the feminist themes in the movie. so, there you go!
