04. transitons

--- experimenting with transitions.

for this blog post, i chose to do the transitions that i liked most.

fade to black, graphic match, and jump cuts!

i felt as though they were all fairly easy to film and edit, especially considering that they were all filmed inside of minecraft! i specifically chose to use minecraft as the platform to film the videos in because it was the one that was most easily accessible from anywhere, as in i could literally just pull it out of my pocket. but anyway! at the end, i also chose to incorporate another gaming platform, roblox. i wanted to shake things up a little, so i feel like i did that quite well.

lets get into each transition.

this was the last transition i did, and the one that took the longest as well. for this, i first loaded up roblox on my laptop, chose a specific game that would have an appropriate background, and filmed my character waving at the screen. then, i did the same on my phone, but on minecraft. it seemed relatively easy, until the time to export the recording from roblox onto my phone came. i couldn't just airdrop it, so i had to email it to myself and then convert the recording into a file that could be supported on mobile. from then on, things were easy again, edit the videos together and sprinkle some magic on em and...

TA-DAAAA!

now, moving onto jump cuts, this type of transition was one that had actually caught my attention before. i saw it a lot in travel videos, youtubers like casey neistat used it pretty often. recently, its also become popular in tiktok videos, too. so, i decided to give it a bit of a shot. originally, i had wanted to film it as my game character walking, with each step or two triggering a jump cut to a different character. but, unfortunately, i couldn't keep the camera still or consistent throughout the shots, so i had to scrap that idea. i ended up just going for a continuous movement, with the cuts being much simpler. once that was done, it was just a matter of editing the clips together and then it was done!

and for the last, and simplest, transition i picked a fade to black. when i think fade to black i think of mystery, like an old timey movie about a detective in a rainy city, solving a crime. so i tried to include a little bit of that in my own scene. first, i filmed my game character walking in the rain, using the third person camera option. then, i placed the clip into an editor, chose where i felt it would be appropriate to begin the transition, and set things into motion. as she walks up the stairs to the house, the screen would fade to black and the clip would end. nice and easy!
