03. classmate critique
--- peer comments and critiques.
for this activity, i chose to comment on my friend jadelyn's post! i had originally seen her in the creative process of making these shots since we were at the same location, and i was really curious as to how they turned out in the final version. so, i checked out her blog!
aaaandd.... they were great! as i expected, they came out really nicely.
you go jadelyn! ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧
however, i did feel like somethings could have been improved on. the first shot i selected to comment on, for example, felt a bit unstable towards the end, as it drifted from the altercation taking place and places more of the focus on her shoulder. This could, however, be kept in if it led to a matching transition, but overall i don't think that was the intentional way to end the scene.
the rest, however, really made me feel like i was actually there as an altercation was taking place! the natural movement of the camera following the subject as she walks gives the illusion that the viewer is right behind her, walking up with her. the way the shot frames the altercation also makes it feel like walls closing in, like an adrenaline surge that one would get during the lead up to a fight!
for the second shot that i chose to comment on, i could only admire. i never would have thought to use an overhead shot for a dialogue scene, though seeing it in execution really makes me wish i had! it creates a feeling of inclusion and intimacy, because being huddled up in a circle like that usually signifies privacy, you don't want people outside of your circle in. overall, her shots really served their purpose well!
oh my god. i LOVE meo, i cannot express this enough.
as i was watching over all the clips on minh's blog, i found it hard to even find anything to critique because
1. minh did such a good job
2. MEO IS SO CUTE
no but, seriously, these shots were amazing. the first shot that really stood out to me was the overhead shot. featuring meo sitting in the middle of the shot, i felt it frames meo's amazing presence quite nicely, placing her directly in the focus of the frame, where she stands out because of her coat pattern. it almost reminded me of the papers they show you during eye exams, with lots of white space and only one possible thing to really keep your eyes on. for that reason, i do believe the shot was well crafted.
the second shot that stood out to me was the one of meo's eye! it was an extreme close up shot of meo's right eye. i've always really liked shots in movies that include a subject's eyes, perhaps because of the feeling that they're supposed to give, but i especially enjoy seeing them with non-human subjects! because we're usually never close enough to animals to really see their eyes at such proximity, a shot like this gives a kind of surreal, almost awe-like feeling. it sort of humanizes something that isnt even human, which is exactly what it did for meo here. i was able to very clearly tell that meo was very sleepy, so i'd say the shot succeeded!
overall, everyone did amazing! here are the links to their blogs in the case that you want to check them out!
